There is a movement in the Canadian Parliament to introduce a bill which would add a secondary charge of murder to the docket for anyone who would kill a pregnant mother causing the unborn child to die also. It would seem that supporters are willing to acknowledge the life of the unborn child in a legal sense when it comes to punishing a criminal.
One might expect that this would also create the precedent needed to revisit the abortion issue as it would indeed acknowledge the reality that the life held in the womb is deserving of consideration under the law. This is not the case unfortunately. They are adding all sorts of definitions to the act; all designed to make sure that it would not conflict with current laws regarding abortion.
It is a maddening effort to contemplate how one can justify this legal juggling act, and sad that one cannot support this new law as a step forward. Bp. Andre Queen discusses briefly the illusory nature of the freedom we have in the Americas in his letter, Humanae, which is a sad reality only made clear in this legislative attempt. _________________ Pax!
