Holy (Extreme) Unction.
“We believe Extreme Unction to be a Sacrament of the New Dispensation, instituted for the spiritual and corporal solace of the sick. Its efficacy and mode of administration are plainly indicated in the Catholic Epistle of Saint James. "Is any sick among you, let him bring in the priests of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord.” 25
“Unction is a Sacrament in which the Priests of the Church anoint the sick with oil, for the healing of the infirmities of their souls, and if it should please God those of their bodies also.” 26
Holy Unction is also called “Anointing of the Sick” and has been a sacrament of the Church from its inception. Scripture bears witness to the establishment of this sacrament and the proper minister of it.
“Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)
The elders (bishops and priests) of the Church were (and are) the proper ministers of this sacrament, and so it continues from the beginning of Christianity to our present age. They are the successors to the Apostles, to whom Christ gave the authority to anoint and pray for the healing of the sick. “And they cast many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.” (Mark 6:13)
